Description: Armored, small to large cell of variable shape. Many species have apical and antapical horns and/or antapical spines. Chloroplasts absent in most species.

Cell Size: Variable from < 50um to > 100um

Distribution: Widespread throughout the world's oceans.

Monterey Bay species: P. oceanicum, P. conicum, P. divergens, P. crassipes, P. steinii, P. excentricum.
